Frequently Asked Questions

Clear, technical answers regarding European oak installation, underfloor heating compatibility, sanding lifespans, and subfloor preparation across London properties.

Q1 Can engineered European oak flooring be installed over underfloor heating?

Yes. Engineered European oak is the industry-recommended timber choice for underfloor heating (both water-piped and electric systems). Its multi-ply cross-laminated core counteracts thermal expansion and contraction, preventing cupping and shrinkage. We ensure the subfloor surface temperature stays within the recommended maximum of 27°C and comply strictly with BS 8201 standards.

Q2 What is the difference between herringbone and chevron parquet flooring?

The key difference lies in the board angle and pattern geometry. In herringbone parquet, rectangular boards are laid at 90-degree angles to one another, creating a staggered zigzag pattern. In chevron parquet, the board ends are precision-milled at a 45-degree or 60-degree angle, meeting point-to-point to form a continuous straight arrow line. Both can be installed with matching perimeter border details.

Q3 How many times can an engineered wood floor be sanded and refinished?

The sanding lifespan depends directly on the thickness of the genuine European oak top layer (wear layer). A 3mm wear layer can typically be sanded 1 to 2 times; a 4mm wear layer can be sanded 2 to 3 times; and a 6mm wear layer can be sanded 4 to 5 times. With routine maintenance and protective oiling or lacquering, an engineered oak floor typically lasts between 30 and 50+ years.

Q4 What subfloor preparation is required before laying timber floors?

Proper subfloor preparation is critical for floor longevity. Before installation, our in-house surveyors test subfloor moisture levels using digital hygrometers; concrete subfloors must register below 75% Relative Humidity (RH). If moisture exceeds this threshold, we apply a specialist liquid damp-proof membrane (DPM). We also smooth uneven surfaces with self-levelling compounds and install high-density acoustic underlay to meet soundproofing regulations.

Q5 How does 99.8% dust-controlled floor sanding work?

Traditional sanding can release large volumes of airborne wood dust throughout a property. Our process utilizes heavy-duty professional sanding machines connected to two-stage cyclonic vacuum extractors with multi-tier HEPA filtration. This system captures 99.8% of fine timber dust directly at the point of abrasion, keeping living areas clean and safe for residents.

Q6 Do you employ subcontractors or in-house floor fitters?

Euro Floors London operates exclusively with our own qualified, full-time in-house craftsmen. We do not use third-party subcontractors. This ensures complete quality control, strict adherence to British Standard BS 8201:2011 joinery tolerances, and direct accountability from initial site survey through to final handover.
